La Habana – Hotel New York #999

5001.200

The series “La Habana” is a photographic project produced by the Spanish Embassy in Cuba on the occasion of the Spanish presidency of the Council of the European Union. First seen in the exhibition “Cruce de ojos” at the National Library of Cuba, its images were took defining a dichotomous dialogue with the “Horizons” series by the Anglo-American artist Sze Tsung Leong.

The objective of this project has been to draw a map of La Habana taking into consideration these points of convergence, locations in the urban plot where different languages intermingle, sometimes imperceptibly. From these points is created on the map an alternative route through which to explore and discover the nuances of the Caribbean capital.

When you cross the door that marks the entrance to Chinatown in Havana, in an abandoned four-storey building in Calle Dragones, you can still read an old poster on a marquee that arouses interest: “New York Hotel“. Undoubtedly, its name in honor of an American city betrays its pre-revolutionary origin. The one that was one of the best hotels of the capital was nationalised in 1960 and, since then, its decline has been progressive. Opened in 1919, its interiors around two parallel courtyards, reminiscent of the style of big American hotels.
